Lord of the Rings > or < Star Wars

See yesterday's inequality here

Today's Inequality:
Lord of the Rings > Star Wars
7 to 5

Lord of the Rings embodies every element of fantasy adventure from the green grass and rolling hills of the Shire to the gates of Mordor. Gandalf sets the example for what a wizard should be: dominant and all-knowing. The lore of Sauron and the creation of the rings is a tale in itself; and the character Gollum leaves quite the impression. The villains are as dark as the heroes are light and the battles are as classic as the story itself.

Main Protaganists: Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Sam, Frodo, Boromir, Gandalf, Pippin, Merry, Galadriel

Main Villains: Sauron, Saruman

Star Wars is the quintessential science fiction/fantasy story. It is the origin of possibly one of the greatest weapons ever, the light-saber. Powers like Force Push and Force Lightning are also available in combat to those powerful enough to access them. To accompany these impressive abilities is the epic struggle between Light and Dark, one of the most bad-ass and complex villains, and a couple great (if not odd) love stories to boot. Many games and videos have spawned from these films including duels, Star Wars Kid, Space Balls and this great clip from Triumph.

Main Protaganists: Yoda, Luke Sywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker (haha), Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Padme, C3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, Mace-mothafucking-Windu

Main Villains: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine

  1. Wow- this was tough. In the end, I went with Legolas and his golden locks.

  3. Unfortunately, this one has a clear and obvious victor. When factoring in all aspects of these highly memorable franchies, one must inherently factor in the prequels of either series; the Lord of the Rings prequel has yet to be filmed, but already with much of its original cast returning to reprise their roles as well as Peter Jackson being at the helm, it's guaranteed to be, at worst, mediocre. Ascribing the same adjective to the overall quality of Star Wars' prequels would be gracious beyond logic. It is for that reason that Lord of the Rings easily trumps its opposition here. In a contest of original trilogy v. original trilogy, the outcome would be up in the air, but as it stands, with all episodes necessitating consideration for the conclusively superior franchise, Lord of the Rings takes the cake.

  4. This is a really hard decision for me. They both have made such an impression. The story of Star Wars is so great and I can't forget the countless hours I spent playing Duels. Plus, lightsabers - nothing is better. However, in the end I have to lean to Tolkien's masterpiece. The books have inspired many other fantasy novels and games all of which I enjoy. Plus Shane's arguement has swayed me to agree - the LOTR movie franchise as a whole is better than Star Wars.

  5. ...and when I say "better" I mean "has greater value" because this is an inequality, haha.
